What’s Happening

The Dos Pueblos High School Girls’ Soccer Teams in the Santa Barbara, CA play for the Girl Child Network and are sponsored by four local businesses. This local sports team and their community are unified in their efforts to make a difference in the area of Gender Equality – U.N Millennium Development Goal #3. The partnership is powerful.

The businesses not only sponsored the girls throughout program, they are pledging a percentage of purchases to the cause during the season. The growing community of World Peace Through Sports brought in new and loyal customers to support the sponsors throughout the season. The girls are committed to their sponsors and it looks like they will joining in a World Peace Through Sports sponsorship for another year.

It is especially exciting to see the sisterhood that has formed between young local girls playing soccer and girls in Kenya. The young women in Kenya are empowered by knowing they have this new sisterhood. They too now want to become a World Peace Through Sports Team so they can play for girls less fortunate than themselves. Some of the Santa Barbara team members have visited the girls in Kenya, bringing them soccer equipment and the supportive signs they made for them. The girls from Santa Barbara have shared their stories and can’t wait to get back on the field and play their hearts out to make a difference!

“I feel like I am doing something so much more worthy, not just playing soccer for fun…because I am helping myself and others at the same time.”

- Katie Boehm, Captain, DP Girls Soccer

“The girls in Kenya were so excited to know that they were being thought of by girls in America.”

- Merci Musomi, Director, Girl Child Network

The ripple effect is powerful. We are fostering a new youth sports program that is truly creating partnership and community both locally and globally. Through a mutually sustainable effort, the sponsors have a new kind of brand loyalty, the youth teams are playing a global game that is a win-win and have an additional funding source, and the cause has a sustainable source of funding as well as a raised awareness of their work.
